Why Do We Worship?

Recently, I had the privilege of listening to a wonderful man named Jack Reese for 4 hours on this subject. I will try to explain it briefly, although his explanation was brief at 4 hours. Hopefully, I don’t hurt his explanation too badly and don’t leave too much out.

Why do we worship?

To form a community of Gods people in the shape of Jesus. Without community, we live in darkness and fall short of God.

Who is God? God is Holy, he is also unique, one of a kind, our creator.

In the early church, the order of worship:

1) To gather; People coming together and confessing “I am a sinner”

2) Reading of the Word; Gods word from the scriptures

3) Receiving the peace of Christ and passing it on to our brothers and sisters (Embracing and saying peace be with you in Jesus’ name)

4) Table; Remembering the crucifixion of Jesus through body (bread) and blood (wine), this was set in motion at the last supper by Jesus, so we never forget what Jesus went through for us. Not only remembering, but also participation in the crucifixion of our lord, to feel his gift to us.

5) Sending (Share); Helping others by money, word of God or however we can help

God does not only want us to sing and praise him within the walls of the church, but to also see with Gods eyes those who need our help outside the church, not to walk on by and be blind to their existence.

This is how we form a community, this is why we worship and prepare ourselves as Christians, who doesn’t think twice about helping someone in need, because that is what we do.

Remember who you are, not what to do and what to do will come natural. Spread the love, spread the peace, love thy neighbor, open your eyes and worship 24/7, not just inside the walls of the church.

Humble yourselves as Jesus did, as a slave to God, our creator. Always giving, as Jesus did, complete to death, even death on a cross. It's not about you or me, it's about what God wants, the way of the cross.

God's wisdom is so great and above us, it seems foolish to us. His power is so great and above us, it seems weak to us. Always leave your heart open to the lord and listen to our God, the almighty, king of kings and our creator.

This is why we worship. This is what God wants. Please forgive me, if I forgot anything.

By the tender mercy of our God,
May the dawn from on high break upon us,

To give light to us who sit in darkness
and in the shadow of death.

In all things, may the God of the universe
Guide our feet into the way of peace.

Always, in the name of Christ Jesus, our lord and savior
Amen!
